The games were originally held to celebrate Apollo’s victory over the serpent Python, which according to Greek mythology, took place near the sanctuary of Delphi where the games were held. He was the God of the arts, music, healing, purification, prophecy, oracles, plague, poetry, civilization, the sun, truth, intelligence, logic, reason, and archery, he also showed men the art of medicine. One of Apollo's most important daily tasks was to harness his four-horse chariot, in order to move the Sun across the sky.
