The electric will straight up just give you more options while allowing you to still play it as a vanilla acoustic. Depending on the type of Kalimba, perhaps clamping the body of the kalimba (and/or plugging the sound hole with some tissue, if one is present) would reduce the sound of the instrument sufficiently for those around you. But I have no idea what's the best number of keys like is it 17 or 21?. So I've recently started being interested in Kalimba again and thought maybe I should give it a try now. Any experience with Hluru electric kalimba with built in effects? As the tittle goes. I'd go for that, especially since you're already a musician and, I'm assuming, have experience with or want to experiment with recording and mixing your instruments.
